Radio Nova UK originally started in Spain, with Radio Nova Costa Blanca, or Radio Nova Spain. The radio Nova management and presenters provided a quality radio service for many years that was special in many ways.
Firstly, as the Radio Nova boss, Andy Burton wanted to give his listeners’ a different aspect to local (and national) radio, that he felt, was dwindling in many ways… Exciting, Fun, interactive radio was his goal. With local business and local talent promotions, he promoted and implemented low-cost, effective advertising and sponsorship deals for businesses around the local catchment areas THAT WORKED! Businesses were ‘over-the-moon’ with the results which only he knew how to achieve.
Along with this, and his ‘specialist’ experienced presenters that knew exactly what Andy wanted, he forged an amazing and unforgettable team that ‘blew the socks’ off other local and regional radio stations in Spain (and the UK for that matter).
Andy did the same with Horizon Radio, Nottingham’s FUN radio station back in the 1990s. Because of Andy’s strong and passionate belief in his abilities to provide good, entertaining and enthralling radio that no other IRL or Community radio service provided, Horizon Radio, perched between Nottingham’s (then) Radio Trent, and Radio One on FM, (with jingles like “The Rose between two thorns”); was deemed to be the most successful PIRATE radio station north of London in the 1990s.
Recently in 2020, Andy, having applied to Ofcom for the largest Community Radio Licence EVER advertised for FM, 7 towns spanning 75 miles… it was advertised, but Ofcom refused the application. So now he eagerly awaits the advertisement of localised DAB licences. Although this is rather a disappointing opportunity compared to an FM frequency, it seems to be the only choice remaining; as Ofcom are apparently no longer advertising applications for licences within the FM frequencies.
But Andy feels there is even better potential, which is to enter the world of smart speakers. People can also buy them for their vehicles now, so the spread of the smart speaker builds even higher.
